VPR Cast#65: “Yak and DDO 1/3”

Welcome to our 65th mmo podcast at mmoSmacktalk.com! Yak is back and he’s talking Dungeons and Dragons Online (DDO). This is the first ddo podcast of a three part series.

About this glorious mmo podcast (below are the annotations for the entire triple cast):

EQ1: Barabarian is a clas not race.
Return to LOTRO, waste of time on WOW/EQ2 clones, go into detail about this. (Runekeeper is LOTRO on easy mode; everyone gets 1 hour res, etc.)
Briefly talk about playing Meridian59. (The free on-official server) Small pop not enough PVE, very outdated graphics, etc. if the official has a higher population then it might be worth it.
Disclaimer that I am a D&D fanboy. (Hate it when people say other MMO’s are the closest thing to D&D. D&D is the real deal.
Go into detail about XP, questing leveling. No grinding, only get XP from finishing quests. Can do quests in solo, normal, hard or elite difficulty. (XP scales, 25% hard, 50% elite.)
Talk about PVE in detail. Have to complete quest to get the XP. Quests have puzzles, levers, DM voice in the background. Go into detail about the “Proof is in the Poison Quest”, as an example. Talk about how quests are liek D&D as they should be, this isn’t your typical grind hack and slash like in WOW, LOTRO, etc.
Go into detail about Rest Shines SP (Mana) Management, Death/Res, Soul Stones, how to rest, etcAI is very smart and scales with difficulty.
No auto lock on targeting, have a target and must mouse over your target. (No tab target.)
Talk about how the quests are laid out in town and how the instancing works. Compare it to how much better it is compared to Guild Wars for example.
Grouping/LFG system. How it works, benefits of grouping. Can be played solo but game is meant to be played as a group. (Grouping is where it is at.) Incentive to group has you get more XP for hard and elite. Not based on how many mobs you kill. (Bonus for not dying, side quests, kill bosses etc, but penalties if the level is too high.)
F2P VS. Premium and VIP accounts, the differences, what you get. Talk about the game being free etc, quest packs, XP buffs, etc
Talk about the D&D mechanics such as saving throws and DC checks and skills to lead into the topic on classes.
Rouge Class is not a DPS class. Unlike any other MMO they can search for traps, disarm them, and have a real use in dungeons to pick locks unlike WOW. How into detail on the Rouge and how everyone has the basic search skill.
Fighter classes, Fighter, Barbarian, Pally, Ranger
Casters, Wizard, Sorcerer class in detail.
Casters healers, Cleric Favored Soul.
Bard class and how it is different from other MMO’s.
Skills, abilities, enhancements, feats, penalties that feats can help with etc.
Human example 28 points to allocate.
Auction House
Buying from vendors, haggle skill
Soul bound items are only from some quest rewards that I have seen so far and a lot of items are BOE or BOP
Durability of items and how bonuses don’t stack
Very gear focused game.
Cooldowns and item use per day/rest period, rest shrines.
Items do have level restrictions, etc talk about why frost bane weapons and very good and sell for a lot./dd>

Potions, wands, eternal wands
How long Yak plans on playing DDO.

  1. I just finished listening to the cast and have to say:

    There is tab targetting in DDO! If you don’t like the aiming aspect you can just as easy hit tab or simply click on enemies. In fact having an enemy as selected target makes it basically much easier to hit HIM and not his friends when you’re surrounded – as a caster I wouldn’t like the aiming, tab is a lot more precise. It also makes it impossible to miss him with ranged weapons and magic. I’m not a 100% sure about this, but I’m pretty confident this is true. I also don’t think you can physically dodge missiles in DDO. When mobs shoot arrows at you, they do not miss.

    Anyway, it was a great monologue, I hope there’s a bit more smacktalk in the next two parts. 😛

  2. Yak, where the hell are you! I thought there was some sort of aiming feature! 😀 haha.

    @nizzle: fo shizzle. We get into a dialog in part three. Where we talk some darkfall too. haha. That’s a topic I cant leave alone.

  3. @nizzie: Right. By the time part three completes, he will have touched on all the points seen in the cast annotations. Basically, he covers the vast majority of what a new player needs to know about ddo. In part three he concludes his ddo stuff… i ask questions, and then we discuss elements of other games, like dfo.

  5. Yeah, he covers a lot of ground. What’s great is that it’s not repetitive. Therefore in each hour we are learning new things about dungeons and dragons online.

  6. Hiya MMOSmackTalk folks! Jerry here from DDOcast. I was thrilled to hear that you’ve gone in-depth into DDO on your show here!

    To reply to Nizzie’s comment: Yes, you very much can dodge arrows and most other missile weapon attacks in DDO. I do it all the time. In fact, I’m working on a YouTube tactics video to explain some of this stuff, not sure when it will be done though (setting up the right combat for video explanations is a bit of work). You can not dodge magic missile spells, for the most part, since they automatically hit. However, they too can be sorta dodged if you are able to get around a corner or something and the missile hits the wall instead. It’s tough to pull off with any regularity but is possible.

    The best advice to dodge arrows is to use your Q and E keys. It’s also a matter of timing. You’ll see him fire, then dodge right-left, stand there, wait til the mob fires again, dodge again, etc. If you get good at it, you can dodge and pick ’em off with bows.

  7. @Jerry: thanks for posting here, and settling, in my mind at any rate, the dodging missile issue. While Yak did state that projectiles could be actively avoided, this was overshadowed in my mind by misinformation from my past. So thanks for helping to set the record straight!

  9. Heh, just thinking of a few other comments:

    – You actually can hold down your attack button to auto-attack. There’s also an auto-attack button that can be placed in your hot bar. However, combat is still quite different from WoW even with auto attack. Combat in DDO is much more interactive, as you noted.

    – Remove Fear potions! Get them, especially at lower levels. They are cheap (59 gold) and really help out. Also, they are area of effect, so if someone in your party is feared you can get close to them and use it to help them out. You can’t cast remove fear or take a pot if you are the one feared, so a help-out is key.

    – Sorry if this was mentioned and I missed it, but DDO does not use THACO (To Hit Armor Class Zero). It’s based on 3.5, which uses a base attack bonus + modifiers to determine whether you land a strike against the target’s AC.

    – AH! I see you discussed the missile attack thing later on in the show.

  10. @Nizzie: There is an auto attack butt ion, but you still have to AIM with the mouse. With the default buttons you can’t use tab to select your enemy’s and as caster I am for sure 100% have to aim with most spells like fire ball. However magic missile is the only spell that locks onto the target once selected but you have to be with in the line of site. Can you please verify in the game where you turn on this tab target feature? I have not seen this. Just got back from out of town.

  11. @Jerry: Correct you can hold down the left house key but you still have to aim the hair trigger over the target. :) i just tried it with the auto attack button and I still had to click to attack.

  12. It appears that Yak – you are using the new-ish button configurations that came into the game with Mod 9-Dungeons and Dragons Online: Eberron Unlimited. If you press the “G” key you will turn off/on auto-targeting. Use Tab to target nearest enemy (i think), Backspace to target “next” enemy. F1-12 keys target party members. Once you get it down you will see great results.

    The “old” DDO used a right-mouse click for attack, which is what I know. DDO:U has (apparently) as a default the left-mouse for attack, which makes sense from an MMO standardization standpoint. But reading the comments makes me want to tell ya about the above stuff, try checking it out and see if it improves your game.

  13. @Jerry: You think wrong! I tired what you said and I am not able to just tab to hit enemys. It bothers me when people are too lazy to actually find out the truth. Instead of guessing please test this, as the game is free.

  14. Darkfall Expansion delayed until mid november.. that sucks. I planned to resub this week or the next.. once the expansion released. Well..

  15. @Yakster Eh, not sure what is happening to you then with tab targeting. I’ve been doing it for years now and it works fine. Maybe there’s a difference between the Classic interface and the new interface?

  16. @nizzie: I wouldn’t use the word nerfed as they are not taking something that the developers feel is way over powered and then going to gimp it. It looks like they are going to make magic use balanced. That is a good thing so that way you will have to use your other skills until the cool downs recharge.

  17. @Lessah: so that’s personally enforced then (re permadeath)? That is called being hardcore on yourself :D. Yak, I suggest you implement said hardcoreness post haste. BTW, Lessah et al, great work on your casts!

    @nizzie: hahahaha! I think the magic nerf, as you put it, is not so much a nerf as it is more inline with the developers’ original game design. How so, you ask… good question. haha. I think the plan was that the game would definitely be twitch dependent to help level the playing field between mature characters and newer characters… the leveler being player twitch. Right now, there are so many nuclear bomb, holocaust inducing nukes that shitty players controlling a surging nuke whore will fuck you up with no personal skill. Summary: devs always wanted personal skill to play a large role in pvp, and tightening up the aoe timers, and maybe splash zones, will further their design.

  18. @Lessah: Permadeath would not be a fun style for me to play. What you said, says it all gut-wrenching. In order for this to work, you would need to have a hardcore server and make it so that should you die in a dungeon your ghost and go out and find a priest in town and make it difficult to res. Then maybe take away the shrines in quests, ouch that would be hardware. Since it is harder, it would only be fair to give more expirence and better loot for quests and you will need it.

  20. And its call is so strong! I had a great day in Darkfall yesterday, yeah I re-subbed. Met an australian guy and he took me on my first raft trip (to kill sele golems on an island) and we also did some dungeon runs. It was great. I’m still not in a clan, and I will stay solo. There’s a lot of cool solo players like him out there, so there’s no need to join a clan.

  21. Coming soon to the site with in the next few will be a section called “Yakster’s Corner” It will be me casting in adition to the main cast once a week or whenever I feel like it. Ryan is currently working out the technical part on the site. :)
