VPR Cast#44: “The Paulmercial”

Welcome to our 44th mmo podcast at mmoSmacktalk.com! First the sad news… this is more a variety podcast than an mmo podcast. Now for the good news… this is a variety podcast moreso than an mmo podcast. So what does this mean to your wonderful world? It means more hard hitting ignorance from the boys of mmoSmackTalk.com! 😀 Hear Ryan blunder through physics, Paul opine silly, Vince wax wasteful, and Ben talk about his winnings at the Shark’s game. JUST so that we are clear, those who want more mmo talk than not, this cast is not for you; however, we do hit mmo topics throughout.

BTW, thought I’d give you guys an update of what we’re playing now: nothing. With the collapse of WAR there seems to be an mmo vacuum. I’m thinking that’s why DFO was slammed so hard with orders… total speculation. Consequently we have not been able to purchase our dream game. We are now biding our time, letting others suffer through the release day/week (month?)pains of DFO before we jump in and start spanking fools. If you have any updates you’d like to share, please post your experience or a link that represents your feelings.

They actually fixed the gem problems you guys talked about way back in November I think, plus have done lots of balancing so one shotting is not like it used to be. Other new things since you left: A lot more gear available, PVP armor sets you can buy in Old Tarantia behind the auction house, Ymirs Pass, a huge zone with the Amphitheater dungeon that has about 8 unique armor sets, and very fun, A new lvl 80 dungeon Xibiluku in Thunder River, and lots more crafting recipies for those who are into that kind of thing – Server merges also took place so they are a lot more populated, I think that is most of the big changes, but a lot of class tweaking has been done and gems were severly nerfed a looong time ago

…Also… I am on the Wiccana server in the Bloodlines guild, which is a decent size, and took part in a seige a few days ago, Must have had 50-75 on each side, no lag, it was awesome even though we lost, we are going to try to get our keep back on Friday, anyway, the point being they have improved seiges and end-game raiding tons in the last few months as well. If you have a good rig DX10 is coming online tomorrow. God rays of sunlight, trees swaying in the wind, grass that moves around you as you walk through it, have tried it on the test server and it looks really good… anyway I think you will have fun coming back

I liked the game’s pvp… so-so (the combo system ended up being more of a drag than anything). The pve, solo, was a miserable experience. I literally played solely to level, and rarely enjoyed it. Not sure that I’ve EVER felt this way in an mmo. I liked L2 solo grind at least twice as much. Just as someone else said, maybe Connor, that it’s the same thing over and over… like fucking Ground Hog’s Day. When I played with the guys as a group, that was fun, but rare as well. So in the end result the game was highly UNcompelling. I did enjoy the graphics though, but that’s not enough. As a matter of fact, one thing that I prefer over graphics are physics. So you’re comment about the wind in the grass is nice, but I also want the river’s current to take you. I don’t know why, but I really liked this aspect in Vanguard. I don’t know that I’ll NEVER play aoc again, but for me the odds are slim. Perhaps I’ll have to see how the guys are liking it. Overall it’s just hard to play a game that is so limited, and that’s the way I feel in AoC.

Vince and Paul, what I don’t understand is why you don’t just roll toons on WAR full pvp server. There is far more strat in that game.
